Voltaire once wrote, “The superfluous, a very necessary thing.” What, then, should we make of a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 with 662 hp and a claimed 200-plus-mph top speed? Is there a deeper philosophical argument to be made about the necessity of a live-axle production car with more power than an overclocked supercollider? Does the vehicle in question—the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500—teach us about the nature of right and wrong, indulgence and restraint?
Perhaps. But mostly, it just hauls mind-bending ass. Be a good, excess-loving American, and don’t overthink it.
The group behind this special Cobra wanted to honor the late great Shelby. Using a 662-bhp Shelby GT500 Cobra wide-body coupe as a prodigiously powerful base for the project, the extra punch of nearly 200 additional horsepower is provided by a 4.0-liter Whipple supercharger. A 6-speed manual feeds this asphalt-melting power to massive 20x13-inch rear tires that look as though came straight off a steam-roller—albeit one fitted with a gorgeous set of thin-spoke alloy wheels. The front wheels measure an equally impressive 20x10-inches. Shelby American developed a special hood for the car, along with a new rear body design.
The look is American testosterone-laden aggression, and we love it from the huge front air intakes to the four chrome exhaust tips pointing out the back. The special blue-and-white paintjob pays homage to the color scheme most often associated with the original 1960s Shelby Cobras.
